Grampian Institute of Sport :: GIS

About Us

Success on the world’s sporting stage is not easy for any athlete to achieve. It requires a combination of great ability, self-determination, unwavering focus and total commitment. The Grampian Institute of Sport (GIS) is rightly proud of its record in supporting athletes from the Grampian area who have shown that they have the potential to be future Scottish winners on the world stage.

Background

The GIS is part of a national network that is beginning to change the face of performance sport in Scotland. Officially launched in 2000/2001 it is one of six Area Institutes of Sport that form an integral part of the Scottish Institute of Sport network. Together they were set up to offer Scotland’s most promising young athletes access to essential support services. The GIS aims to provide selected athletes with individually tailored programmes designed to help improve their performances, achieve selection to the Scottish Institute of Sport and ultimately develop their potential to reach the top level in their chosen sport.

Funding

The GIS is supported by the National Lottery through sportscotland and also by its six partners, namely, Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeenshire Council, the Moray Council, the Robert Gordon University, the University of Aberdeen and the Scottish Institute of Sport.

Facilities

The GIS is a non-residential institute, which utilises the sporting facilities made available through its partner agencies to allow high performance athletes to live, study, work and train within Grampian.

Athletes

GIS supports athletes across a range of sports (see 'Sports' section for current details). Both able bodied and athletes with a disability benefit from the services made available.

Support Services

Advanced and specialised coaching, sports science and sports medicine services, advice on dealing with lifestyle issues and sport, and training and competition support are provided to GIS athletes.

Looking Ahead for the GIS

The GIS is excited about what is ahead in the future including the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and especially the 2012 Olympic Games in London and, of course, the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. It is hoped that a proportion of the athletes that take part in these events will have benefited from the support of the GIS.
