Beijing Paralympics: (15/09/08) Fachie Misses Out On Finals
15th September 2008
Neil Fachie (Aberdeen) missed out in his bid to reach the final of the 100m and 200m in the Bird's Nest Stadium over the weekend and this morning.
First up was his heat of the 100m on Saturday. With only the first three from the two heats plus the two fastest losers overall qualifiying for the final Neil was going to have to run a season's best, if not a personal best, to give himself a realistic chance of making it. Neil clocked 11.53 seconds which was outside his season's best and also eight hundredths of a second outside the time of the eighth qualifying slot.
In the final itself Jason Whyte from Ireland broke his own world record for the second time that day with a winning time of 10.62 seconds.
This morning (Monday 15 September) Neil was back in the stadium for heat one of the 200m and was drawn in lane one with Jason Whyte lining up next to him. Again with the first three and fastest two losers to go through from two heats Neil was going to have to produce a fast time but could only run 23.17 seconds to finish fifth with his Irish opponent winning in a new world record time of 21.81 seconds. While the winner of heat two didn't manage to better the new world record mark it was a much faster heat overall from which both fastest losers qualified ending Neil's hope of a run in tomorrow's final.
