Hockey (03/05/10) Scotland's Women Land Silver Medal in Chile

3rd May 2010

The Scotland hockey squad, including Leigh Fawcett and Aimee Clark, (pictured) had to endure the effects of a Chilean earthquake, volcanic eruptions in Iceland and endless flight delays to face the rigours of four games in as many days in the World Cup Qualifier in Santiago.

The Scots opened against Ireland on Thursday April 29, then played Australia and Malaysia in the following two days, finishing with hosts Chile on Sunday May 2. The only team to qualify for the World Cup finals in Rosario (Argentina) will be the pool winner.

After a 2-0 win over Ireland in the first game, Scotland came up against a strong Austrailian team. Despite an outstanding performance by Scotland, Austrlia won 2-1. Boucning back from the loss to Australia, Scotland then went on to thrash Malaysia 5-0. In the last game of the tournament, Scotland beat Chile 1:0 to earn second place in this World Cup Qualifier, behind Australia.
