Tennis (05/05/10) No Pressure Helps Henderson Qualify in Edinburgh
5th May 2010
Aberdeen's Joanna Henderson has qualified for her first AEGON Pro Series $10,000 main draw after upsetting the qualifying fourth seed, France's Jessica Cohen, 6-4 6-2 in Edinburgh yesterday.
Playing against the seniors has proved a no pressure situation for 16 year old Henderson who normally competes at junior ITF level and has been studying hard for next week's Higher exams.
"Before yesterday I had never won a qualifying round," said 16 year old Henderson, who had pulled off a convincing 6-1 6-0 win against England's Michelle Jliati in Monday's opening match.
"Today I came here with no pressure on me for the match. The first set was quite close but from 4-4 it was quite straight forward. It was good to win and it is great to be playing here in Edinburgh on home soil.
"There is quite a big difference between junior and senior competitions, and the girl I played today was two or three years older, so this is quite a big step. But I'm just taking it in my stride and I can play with no pressure so it's easier. Now I am looking forward to the main draw."
Henderson is supported by the Grampian Institute of Sport, part of sportscotland's institute network which focuses on preparing Scotland's best athletes to perform on the world stage by providing high performance expertise.
